Hot & Cold Lobster Rolls

I think we started a new tradition in the Gugger home this year.

I love traditions. I'm a really nostalgic person, and family traditions at holidays make the best memories. And a lot of them revolve around food. For Memorial Day this past weekend, we got to host Danny's parents, brother, and his fiancé at our place in Maine for the first time! Most people grill out on Memorial Day to kick off the start of summer, but we don't have a grill yet, so we decided to buy and cook our own lobsters here at home. It was our first time making lobster, and they turned out perfectly. Needless to say, every Memorial Day from here on out will inevitably be compared to the year we had lobster. So that means, lobster's the new Memorial Day tradition, and it's fine by me.

We had 3 leftover lobsters, so naturally we made lobster rolls, but with our own spin. We love traditional lobster rolls, both hot and cold, but we wanted to make them a little more special. The hot lobster roll is rich and decadent with the nutty flavor of brown butter and the anise-like essence of tarragon. The cold lobster roll is light and refreshing with the brightness of lemon and the sweet, yet peppery flavor of fresh basil.

Hot Tarragon-Infused Brown Butter Lobster Roll

  • 1 stick of butter
  • 4 sprigs of tarragon or other fresh herb (thyme or sage would work well)
  • Meat from one lobster
  • Bib lettuce
  • Hot dog buns

1. Place 6 tablespoons of butter into saute pan on medium heat. Save remaining 2 tablespoons for drizzling on top of sandwich.

2. Once butter has melted, add in fresh herbs.

3. Let butter cook around 3 min. Butter will foam, turn toasty brown and smell deliciously nutty.

4. Once butter is toasty brown, remove herbs from pan and add in lobster meat.

5. Grab your bun, a handful of lettuce, and your delicious tarragon-infused brown butter lobster, and make yourself a decadent sandwich!

Cold Lemon Basil Mayo Lobster Roll

  • 1/8 cup of mayo (Use more or less depending on what you like. Our lobster was very lightly coated)
  • 6 fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 a lemon and lemon zest
  • Bib lettuce
  • Hot dog buns

1. Put mayo in small bowl.

2. Squeeze and zest fresh lemon into mayo.

3. Chop up fresh basil and toss into mayo mixture.

4. Stir to combine ingredients. Taste to make sure it's perfectly tangy and herby.

5. Add in lobster meat and fold in to coat lightly with mayo mixture.

6. Grab your bun, a handful of lettuce and your lemon basil lobster, and make a light, delicious sandwich!
